This is a favourite series that has completely snuck up on me! When I picked up the first book in Kerri Maniscalco’s series I enjoyed it, but the more I read of hers, the more I fell completely in love with her stories and characters! The 4th and final book is coming this September and this post is basically just going to be me convincing you why would should pick the first 3 books up and get ready for the release of Capturing the Devil!
1. Victorian historical fiction
One of my favourite parts of this series is the fact that it’s set in the late 1800s – this was the tail end of the Victorian period, still full of the classic Victorian societal customs and fashions, but creeping into the age of industry and invention. It’s such a rich, fascinating time period and a joy to read.
2. Murder mysteries
The essence of each book is that they are historical murder mysteries. They each tackle a new case, all of which are (sometimes loosely) based on real cases that actually happened, and not so obvious ones either. The first book is based around trying to find out the identity of Jack the Ripper, but we also track down a Romanian ripper and other exciting villains.
3. Forbidden romance
One of the big things about a romance set in the Victorian period, is that budding romances were not allowed to be conducted in private. It was all planned and approved with chaperones – even an exposed ankle would have caused scandal! That makes Audrey and Thomas’s romance so much more steamy and tense, when they’re snatching any chance at a moment alone.
4. Vibrant characters
I really adore the characters in this book series. Audrey Rose is an intelligent and fun protaganist who is coping with PTSD symptoms throughout the series and fighting against societal norms. She’s such an interesting character to read and I adore her. Thomas is a cheeky, annoying yet loveable (I’d personally use the word knobhead to describe him) love interest who loves to wind Audrey Rose up, but is also dashing and clever. I really love him.
5. Each book keeps getting better and better!
I’ve loved each book in this series more and more as they progress, the character relationships and the plot lines just keep advancing. It gives you something to look forward to!
6. Super fast paced
The pacing of these books is great – they’re gripping and you can just fly through them. I’ve really enjoyed picking them up when I’ve fancied something bingeable that I can just really get into.
I hope I’ve convinced you to give this series a go, and if you’ve already read it, what’s your favourite thing about the series?
